be it

Be it is an expression that we use to talk about different alternatives.

Whether … or tells us that we have choices, alternatives, and after whether … or, we provide examples. Be it is just another expression we can use to talk about choices and give examples.

Let's have a look at the example below to see how can we use be it.

Some nights before sleep, I crave for fatty food, I go to the kitchen whether it is 12 or 1 am, open the fridge door and stare inside of it for some minutes and go back to bed Do you have the same weird habit? I love all the fatty food whether it is pizza, cheeseburgers, pasta or ice cream. But I try to limit them in my diet and eat healthy.

In the little passage above, let’s take a closer look to these two sentences:

  • I go to the kitchen whether it is 12 or 1 am ……
  • I love all the fatty food whether it is pizza, cheeseburgers, pasta, or ice cream.

Be it can also be used in these sentences in the place of whether ... or.

So, we can say:

  • I go to the kitchen be it 12 or 1 am….
  • I love all the fatty food be it pizza, cheeseburgers, pasta or ice cream.

be it means whether it is. When you use be it, you say this or this.

Be it is formal though. You may not hear it in everyday speech.

How to use be it

I love all the fatty food be it pizza, cheeseburgers, pasta or ice cream.

As you see in this example, be it comes after the noun that you want to talk about more. You want to provide examples and define the noun. Here, you give examples of fatty food and that way, you describe it.

You add or after you talk about the examples: be it … or …
